Our brewery has been based on providing good-quality beers that are not only easy on the palate but also ensure people with gluten intolerance are not missing out on a good beer!

So we’ve been asked a few questions about our beers and here they are!

Q: Are your beers suitable for vegans?

A: All our bottled, canned and kegged beers are suitable for vegans; our cask ales aren’t vegan-friendly because we use a fish-based agent to clarify the beer. However, some breweries use alternative methods, such as filtration or vegan-friendly finings, to produce vegan cask ales, and we are currently looking into whether we can do that.

Q: Are your beers gluten-free?

A: Yes! All our bottles, canned and kegged beers, are gluten-free. Smooth and Gorilla’s Finger are also gluten-free on cask.

Q: Barley is listed on the label as an ingredient. Is the beer gluten-free?

A: Our brewery uses an enzyme called Clarex which breaks down the gluten in the beer. Gluten free beer usually contains 20 parts per million or less of gluten so we make sure to show that these ingredients are labelled as a part of our beer.  Surprisingly, there is no law in the UK that says we have to test our beers but feel reassured that we make sure each batch is tested and approved in an independent lab to make sure the gluten is 20ppm or less.

While we can label our beers as gluten-free, it is important to note that they can also be called gluten-reduced. For someone who reacts to even the slightest amount of gluten, it may be unwise to drink these types of beers.

Q: Do you have any beers that are wheat-free?

We do, yes – our Bricklayer lager and Cliff Hanger ale is gluten and wheat-free but they are only available in bottles and not on keg or cask.
